Technical literacy is not a prerequisite students must bring with them. It is part of the content we teach.

Games that build retrieval
Low-stakes games give students more chances to retrieve a word, explain it, and use it accurately.

Anatomy mnemonic studio
A mnemonic becomes stronger when students create it, map it, test it, and revise it. The goal is accurate retrieval, not a clever sentence by itself.
Choose an anatomy sequence. Make a sentence, rhythm, picture, or story. Label every initial, peer-test the cue, and teach it back.
“Oh, Oh, Oh, To Touch And Feel Very Good Velvet, AH”
The first letters cue the nerves in order. Students can illustrate the sentence, say the names, and teach the pattern to a partner.
“Some Lovers Try Positions That They Cannot Handle”
Students connect each initial to a carpal bone, then use a hand diagram to check the order.
“Never Eat Soggy Waffles”
A quick cue for north, east, south, and west. Ask students to create a new version using their own interests or community.

Each plan moves students from noticing a word part to using vocabulary in a meaningful health science task.
Sample lesson 01
Medical word parts through card sorts and a word race
Students will identify a prefix, root, and suffix and use the parts to explain the meaning of an unfamiliar medical term.
Color-coded word-part cards, term cards, mini whiteboards, body-system visuals, timer, and exit slips.
Learning sequence
Display tachycardia and bradycardia. Students make a quick prediction, then share what clues helped them.
Pairs sort cards into prefix, root, and suffix groups. They add a meaning card and justify one match.
Teams draw one card from each category, build a term when possible, and earn a point only after explaining the word part by part.
Students write a one-sentence chart note using one term and underline the clue that shows its meaning.
Students decode one new term and finish: “I know this because the ___ means ___.”
Collect the exit slip. Look for accurate identification of the morphemes, a reasonable whole-word meaning, and an evidence-based explanation.

I am Amanda Parker, a Health Science teacher at Sebring High School. I hold a B.S.Ed. from East Carolina University and an M.Ed. in Literacy. I use the Anatomage Table 12, classroom tablets, and a simulation lab with Juno manikins while preparing students for NHA CCMA, CPCT, and CMAA certifications.
